The Carbon Farming Group is an independent not for profit organisation which provides information to the rural sector on climate change. This website aims to provide an overview of the current issues.
Sheep and Beef
The sheep and beef ETS case study proves to be one of the most popular information sheets. It gives an example of how the ETS will impact on a typical sheep and beef farm and the impacts a forest may have on reducing the costs of emissions. To see a copy of this info sheet click here.
Carbon Trading
In the last few months foresters have had options to sell an estimated 5 million plus NZU's currently available under the Emissions Trading Scheme. There are a number of buyers currently active in the market including power companies, brokers, and a major bank. This trading has seen returns anywhere from $16 to $18 per unit to the forest owner. Options are also becoming available for owners to forward sell future units. For more information on carbon trading mechanisms see our Info Sheet 5 - Carbon Trading here.
Info Sheets
Copies of both the Sheep and Beef and Carbon Trading info sheets will be appearing inside Countrywide and Rural News in August and September. Click here to view all our info sheets.

The Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) has been developed to meet New Zealand's commitments under the Kyoto Protocol. All New Zealanders will be affected by the ETS. This will generally be in the form of increased fuel and power costs, but for some it could mean accounting for direct emissions such as methane from sheep and cows.
The Carbon Farming Group has developed simple ETS calculators to enable assessment of potential liabilities and opportunities. There are calculators for:
Science indicating human induced climate change has resulted in the development of the Kyoto Protocol. The Kyoto Protocol has binding commitments for signatory countries (such as New Zealand), to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to 1990 levels by 2012.
It is estimated that New Zealand will require 45.5 million carbon credits by the end of 2012.
